Beigel, curry, flat white: the eating order

Ep. 7 · How to eat the three layers, one meal each

FitTrip Editor · 2026.07.16

Food in Shoreditch and Brick Lane follows the layers of migration. Eat the salt beef beigel at Beigel Bake (the Jewish layer), a curry at the southern end of Brick Lane (the Bangladeshi layer), then specialty coffee and brunch (the present layer), and you pass three hundred years through your palate. Boxpark, built from shipping containers in 2011, is the present layer’s signature architecture.

On the overwritten street, the menu is the history book. Each layer left different food behind, so eating the three layers one meal at a time is the most honest way to digest the district Estimate.

Three layers, three meals

Layer · Food · Where

Jewish layer · hot salt beef beigel · Beigel Bake (No. 159, 24 hours)

Bangladeshi layer · curry · the curry strip at Brick Lane’s southern end

Present layer · flat white and brunch · specialty cafés around Shoreditch

Beigel Bake has run around the clock since 1974 Fact, so it slots in anywhere — morning or 3am. Curry works best at dinner; coffee is the comma between markets.

The container layer

Boxpark, beside Shoreditch High Street station, was stacked from shipping containers in 2011 Fact — a testbed of street food and small brands. Like it or not, this is how the district’s newest layer eats and drinks — and as Episode 9 will show, the speed of this layer’s expansion is precisely what the argument is about.
