This district is named New World. Yet the word attached to Shinsekai in Japan today is usually "retro." That mismatch is the key to reading the place.
The cutting edge of 1912
Shinsekai was born on 3 July 1912 Fact. The name came from developing the site where the Fifth National Industrial Exhibition had been held in 1903 — it literally meant new world Fact. The first Tsutenkaku tower and the Luna Park amusement grounds opened with it Fact, making it by the standards of the day the most advanced entertainment quarter around Estimate.
How long it takes a future to become a past
A century on, the district passes for the most old-fashioned place in Japan Estimate. The tower is the second one (Ep.5), Luna Park is gone (Ep.4), and what remains are alleys and kushikatsu shops that formed after the war (Ep.6, 7) Fact. The planned future was erased, and the unplanned things that stayed became the district’s face Estimate. This series walks in that order.
Why half a day, why sunset
Walking around Tsutenkaku and Janjan Yokocho takes 2–3 hours Estimate. But this district runs on the clock — daytime Shinsekai and neon-lit Shinsekai are effectively different places Estimate. So plan to straddle sunset (Ep.8). And at the end, look at what lies just south of this district too (Ep.9).
