Seongsu: From Making Things to Staging Them · 1

Behind the Pop-Up Stores, a Factory Still Runs

Ep. 1 · Why walk beyond the pop-ups

FitTrip Editor · 2026.07.22

To really see Seongsu, look first at the shape a new space has borrowed, not the space itself. Red brick, high ceilings and large doorways were not originally devices for displaying products but industrial architecture built for making and moving goods. A half-day route from the shoemakers' street through the manufacturing alleys, reused factory-form spaces and into Seoul Forest lets you read both "making Seongsu" and "staging Seongsu" together. On Seongsu's main streets, pop-ups running for days or weeks keep changing. But the neighborhood's story is older than any pop-up calendar.

On Seongsu's main streets, pop-ups running for days or weeks keep changing. But the neighborhood's story is older than any pop-up calendar. A semi-industrial district gathering shoemaking, printing, auto-related trades and small manufacturers came first, and new brands began using that spatial condition Fact.

Go to see the transition, not the pop-up

If you only see one brand's event and leave, Seongsu could be replaced by any other commercial district at any time. Moving one block back to see manufacturing signage, cargo entrances and low factory buildings together is where Seongsu's own change becomes visible.

A borrowed shape, an original purpose

Red brick, high ceilings and large doorways were not originally devices for displaying products but industrial architecture built for making and moving goods. This shape is now used as brand-space aesthetics, but knowing what structure it served before changes how you read the same alley.

FAQ

Can I fix pop-up information in advance and build it into a route?
Pop-ups are highly variable. It is safer to keep permanent spaces as the base structure and add pop-ups on the day of your visit.
Is Seongsu's core its café street?
From FitTrip's perspective, the core is manufacturing, shoemaking and the transformation of factory-form architecture; cafés and pop-ups are one layer of the present.
