Stand in a Roma square and an odd déjà vu sets in. That fountain feels like Madrid; that sculpture like Florence. It is not a mistake.
Transplanted symbols
Plaza Villa de Madrid holds the Fuente de Cibeles, a replica of the fountain in Madrid’s Plaza de Cibeles Fact. This bronze in Mexico City was installed in Colonia Roma in 1980 and refurbished in 2011 Fact. Plaza Río de Janeiro holds a bronze replica of Michelangelo’s David, flanked by the building locals call the Casa de las Brujas, the House of the Witches Fact. The character of Ep.2, a district that transplanted the symbols of Europe, repeats in the squares Estimate.
Street and mansion
The most famous street in Roma Norte is Avenida Álvaro Obregón, named after the general and politician of the Mexican Revolution Fact. Casa Lamm on it is a cultural centre and restaurant in a restored 1911 mansion Fact. It is a point where you can step inside and see how the façades of Ep.3 are actually used Estimate.
Linking the route
These landmarks are not scattered. Link the Cibeles fountain, Álvaro Obregón and Plaza Río de Janeiro and the skeleton of Roma Norte hangs together Estimate. The Ep.10 course completes this axis by adding the market of Ep.6 and the cafés of Ep.8.
A perspective
Still, it is better not to read these squares of replicas as romance alone. That Madrid’s fountain and Florence’s David stand in this district restates for whom Roma was built in the first place (Ep.2) Estimate. Whose district that district of taste is now becoming is the question of Ep.9.
