Reinventing the warehouse: art in the ironworks
Ep. 6 · Pioneer Works and the makers in the warehouses
FitTrip Editor · 2026.07.18
From the 1990s, artists and makers moving into empty warehouses began Red Hook’s revival. Its flagship, Pioneer Works, is an arts centre in a repaired nineteenth-century ironworks (Pioneer Iron Works), hosting exhibitions, performances and education. The waterfront warehouses took in wineries, whiskey distilleries and chocolate makers — another kind of production returning where cargo work had left. It is the New York edition of Bermondsey’s arches and Clerkenwell’s attics.
A declined dock district’s revival usually begins with cafés. Red Hook was different — its revival came as making-again.
Art in the ironworks
From the 1990s, artists and makers came to the peninsula for its large, cheap warehouses Fact. The symbol of that current is Pioneer Works — a non-profit arts centre in a repaired nineteenth-century ironworks, its very name an homage to the old factory Fact. Under ceilings built for shipbuilding, exhibitions and performances now run.
Distilling in the warehouses
The brick warehouses along the water took in wineries, whiskey distilleries and chocolate works — maker shops Fact. Another kind of production returned where cargo had left: the New York edition of breweries entering Bermondsey’s arches and designers inheriting Clerkenwell’s attics Estimate. That this district’s revival wears the face of production, not consumption — that is why Red Hook still counts as a working district.
