How a Warehouse Becomes Art

Ep.8 · Incheon Art Platform and the year 2009

FitTrip Editor · 2026.07.20

The Incheon Art Platform is a creative arts complex made by remodelling modern treaty-port buildings around Haean-dong in Jung-gu, opened in September 2009 as part of the city’s old-centre regeneration programme. The approach actively preserved and reused the existing modern buildings. Building C, the performance hall, is a remodelled Korea Express warehouse, and Building D, the former Nippon Yusen Kaisha office, is a registered cultural heritage property used as archive space. Other modern buildings such as the Samwoo Print Shop and the Geummacha tearoom were preserved and reused as well. The mismatch between sign and original use from Ep.4 becomes policy here, and whether this regeneration works leads into the question of Ep.9.

In Ep.4 we saw a bank become a museum. Here that mismatch stops being accidental and becomes policy.

Opening in 2009

The Incheon Art Platform is a creative arts complex made by remodelling modern treaty-port buildings around Haean-dong in Jung-gu, opened in September 2009 as part of the city’s old-centre regeneration programme Fact. The method is what matters — the project actively preserved and reused the existing modern buildings Fact. Instead of clearing and rebuilding, it chose to repair and use what stood.

What became what

The list of conversions shows the layer clearly. Building C, the performance hall, is a remodelled Korea Express warehouse, and Building D, the former Nippon Yusen Kaisha office, is registered cultural heritage used as archive space Fact. The 1888 building named in Ep.4 as among the oldest modern architecture here is precisely this Building D Fact. Beyond those, modern buildings such as the Samwoo Print Shop and the Geummacha tearoom were preserved and reused Fact.

The condition of the warehouse

There is a reason port-city regeneration tends to flow toward art space. Warehouses have wide spans and high ceilings, so they already hold a structure suited to exhibition and performance Estimate. That the district was the hinterland of a wharf (Ep.2) is what made it a candidate for creative space a century later Estimate.

And the question it leaves

But this layer too summons the next chapter’s question. If you repair buildings and make cultural space, do people come? And do those people revive the whole old centre Estimate? Incheon has recently acquired a very concrete case study on exactly this — Ep.9 takes it head on.
