The district of drawings: the design quarter

Ep. 8 · The heirs to the clockmaker’s attic

FitTrip Editor · 2026.07.16

Clerkenwell is now the dense quarter of London’s architecture and design trades, its old workshops and warehouses filled with studios and furniture and lighting showrooms — dense enough that the line “more architects per square mile than anywhere on earth” circulates freely. Clerkenwell Design Week each May turns the whole district into an exhibition. The tradition of the precise hand continues, having changed only its trade — from escapements to drawings and renders.

Look into Clerkenwell’s ground-floor windows and the district’s present shows itself — architectural models, samples of finishes, lighting showrooms. The clockmakers’ district is now the district of drawings.

The inherited attic

Today Clerkenwell is the dense quarter of London’s architecture and design trades Fact. The line “more architects per square mile than anywhere on earth” circulates widely in its promotion Fact — though it reads more honestly as a marketing claim than a verified statistic Estimate. But the density needs no statistics: the clockmakers’ top floors of Episode 3 now hold design studios — buildings built toward the light, met again by trades that use it.

May’s exhibition

The layer peaks each May with Clerkenwell Design Week, when the whole district becomes an exhibition and normally closed spaces open Fact. For a traveller whose dates align, it is the best ticket to reading this district Estimate. If they do not, no matter — the street-facing showrooms open year round, and the district’s real exhibit is the street itself.

FAQ

What is Clerkenwell Design Week?
A design festival held across the district each May: showrooms, exhibitions and installations spread through the quarter, and spaces normally closed open their doors.
Is “most architects per square mile” true?
The line is widely used in promotion, but it is closer to a marketing claim than an independently verified statistic. The density itself, though, is felt just by walking.
What can I see outside festival time?
Street-facing furniture and lighting showrooms (free to enter), architects’ models behind ground-floor glass, and the reuse of the old workshop buildings themselves.
