North Port and the hillside: two Busans

Ep. 9 · Can the city on the stairs become World Heritage?

FitTrip Editor · 2026.07.18

Choryang sits where two forces cross. Offshore, phase one of the North Port redevelopment (the Jungang-dong–Choryang-dong waterfront) converts old port land into a commercial and cultural district; on the slope, the wartime-capital heritage was selected for UNESCO’s priority nomination list in November 2025, with a preliminary assessment filing due September 2026. Below, a new Busan rises; above, the old Busan becomes heritage — the series’ question in its sixth variation: is life on the stairs to be preserved, exhibited, or displaced?

See Episode 8’s night view again by day, and this series’ final question spreads before you: cranes below, stairs behind — two Busans facing each other in one district.

Below: the Busan going up

The North Port redevelopment converts old port land into commercial and cultural districts. Phase one is precisely the waterfront off Jungang-dong and Choryang-dong Fact, with phase two continuing toward Beomil and Jwacheon Fact. Water that was dock labour’s ground is becoming the ground of an opera house and commerce — from Choryang’s stairs, the conversion is visible in real time.

Above: the Busan becoming heritage

In the same hours, the hillside’s memory moves the other way. “Sites of the Busan Wartime Capital” entered UNESCO’s Tentative List in December 2022, was selected for the priority nomination list on 13 November 2025, and faces a preliminary assessment filing in September 2026 Fact. A journey from shack slopes to World Heritage candidacy — while the hillside villages’ shrinking population and empty houses proceed as a separate reality Fact.

The sixth question

Euljiro’s redevelopment, the Rocks’ green bans, the Truman Brewery, Bermondsey’s arches, Smithfield’s move — and now Choryang. In its sixth variation the question becomes: does becoming heritage mean a life is preserved, or exhibited? Estimate One thing is certain — a traveller on Choryang’s stairs today walks a district before the answer is fixed. That openness is precisely the reason to go now.

FAQ

What is the North Port redevelopment?
A major conversion of Busan’s old North Port land into commercial, cultural and residential districts. Phase one covers the waterfront off Jungang-dong and Choryang-dong, with phase two continuing toward Beomil and Jwacheon. The construction zone below the lookouts is the site itself.
How does the UNESCO bid relate to Choryang?
“Sites of the Busan Wartime Capital” is a serial heritage of government and refugee-life sites, with the refugee geography symbolised by the hillside roads as its backdrop narrative. Selected for the priority list in November 2025; preliminary assessment filing planned for September 2026.
Where does a traveller feel this tension?
In the lookout view itself: cranes below, stair villages behind, in one frame. The hillside villages’ shrinking, ageing population and empty houses are part of the same tension.
