From Quarry Cliff to Homes to a Sewing Village

Ep. 2

FitTrip Editor · 2026.07.22

To understand Changsin-dong, look first at the shape of the land. Above this neighborhood stands a cliff once quarried for stone, and below it homes were packed onto narrow lots. As sewing machines then moved into those homes, a unique structure emerged where a residence doubled as a workshop. This traces how terrain shaped both industry and housing together.

Homes built below the cliff

Below the cliff, once quarrying ended, homes packed onto narrow lots. On terrain without much flat land to spare, residents left the slopes and cliff as they were and built homes in the gaps.

When a home becomes a workshop

As sewing machines then moved into those homes, a structure emerged where a residence doubled as a workshop. That the narrow, packed housing shaped by terrain later became a fitting space for small-scale sewing is the starting point of this neighborhood's industrial history.

FAQ

Can the Changsin-dong quarry still be seen?
The cliff terrain once used for quarrying still remains. Note that it is a trace of the past, not an operating quarry facility.
What does it mean that homes contain sewing machines?
It means many houses double as both living and working space. Keep this in mind while walking the alleys and respect residents' privacy.
